Aug. 7
The next Healthy Culpeper Senior Adult Committee meeting will be held Aug. 7 at 3:30 p.m. at the Culpeper County Library. The meeting is open to the public and everyone, especially senior citizens and their caregivers, is encouraged to attend.  For more information contact Jenny Biche at 825-7615 extension 2225.

Culpeper Town Police, in conjunction with the Virginia State Police, will conduct free permanent etching or engraving of identification or serial numbers Aug. 7 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Dominion Square Shopping Center in front of the vacant Farmer Jack’s grocery store.  Not only will police etch or engrave identification numbers of motor vehicles but also serial numbers on all-terrain vehicles, chain saws, motorcycles and other valuable equipment, said Culpeper Office Tim Sisk. Hair It Is, Culpeper: Wear pink hair! October is Breast Cancer awareness month, which is why now through Oct. 31 you can donate $10 to be National Breast Cancer Foundation and receive a free pink hair extension to wear to show your support. Your $10 donation will be given in full to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Your donation includes the application and removal of one Pink SO.CAP.USA Hair extension. Call 547-9194.

Aug. 8
Culpeper Christian Women’s Club will be sponsoring a “Back to School” Brunch, Aug. 13, 9:30 a.m. at Pepper’s/Best Western, Culpeper. Special feature will be Fashion Show with CRH Thrift Shop. Special speaker will be Tanya Villani of Bedford, Va. The cost is $7.50 inclusive.  Call Thelma 937-4069 or Linda 937-3612 by Aug. 8.

The Lake of the Woods Square dance Club will host a plus level dance Aug. 8 in the LOW Woods Center from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  Jesse Shackelford will be our caller and dress is casual.  Price is $5 per person for non-members.  Coming up Aug. 22 is a pot luck invitational sponsored by the club.  Anyone interested in learning to square dance is invited to the lower level of the LOW Clubhouse. Dinner at 6 p.m. followed by dancing in the Clubhouse Great Hall. It is free and it is fun!  For information call 972-6699 or 972-7696.
   
Aug. 9
A benefit dance for Jon Hall, the assistant fire chief at Salem Volunteer Fire and Rescue, will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Aug. 9. Jon was injured in a motorcycle accident May 17 and will not be able to put any weight on his legs for six months and won’t be able to return to work for at least a year. The dance will feature “Moose’s DJ Service” and will be BYOB with snacks and setup provided. Tickets are $10 for a single and $20 for a couple. Adults 21 and older only.

The Culpeper Moose Lodge will be having a “back to school” special Aug. 9, between 1 to 3 p.m. Kids get a bookbag filled with supplies, hot dogs and refreshments will be served to the kids and parents. This is a community service event sponsored by the Culpeper Moose Lodge Bingo. First come, first serve. Supplies will be limited for 100 kids. Any questions call 825-4570.

Local author, Blaine Pardoe will have a book signing for his latest release, “Terror of the Autumn Skies” at Borders in Manassas Aug. 9 beginning at 3 p.m. The book tells the true story of Frank Luke Jr., America’s rogue World War I flying ace. Luke was the first pilot to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Pardoe, who lives in Amissville, is also the author of “Cruise of the Sea Eagle.” He is also one of the original writers in the Battletech fiction series.

The Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and Virginians for Animal Welfare invite you to a legislative forum – a look back at 2008 and a look ahead to 2009. Working together in the 2008 General Assembly Session, animal advocates achieved better laws for Virginia’s animals.

Childbirth Preparation Class at the Family Birth Center at Culpeper Regional Hospital.  The class will help prepare the expectant mother for the birthing experience,  including relaxation and breathing techniques. The class is taught by FBC Certified Childbirth Instructors.  Choose from a weekend series Sept. 6 and 7 or a weeknight series Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5 and 12.  Cost is $85 per couple. Aug. 12
Mr. Jason Williams, the Department of Veterans Services claims agent will visit the Culpeper office of the Virginia Employment Commission from on Aug. 12, and Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Veterans or their family members requiring assistance before those dates may contact the Quantico office at 1-800-925-0640.
A support group for the Chronically Ill meets every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Fauquier Hospital Bistro Restaurant. Call Chaplain Liz Danielsen at 349-5814 for directions or information. Sponsored by Spiritual Care Support Ministry, 76 W. Shirley Avenue, Warrenton. This is non-denominational and free.
 
Aug. 14
The Culpeper County High School graduating Class of 1988 will be holding its 20th Reunion on Aug. 16, at the Best Western, 791 Madison Road, Culpeper, Va. 22701, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Culpeper Branch NAACP will hold their regular meeting Aug. 14 at 7 p.m., at the Antioch Baptist Church, West Street, Culpeper.  Please note the change in date.  The Executive Board will meet at 6 p.m. Call 825-3796.
