The 9th annual 4th of July Car and Bike Show sponsored by Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. will take place in downtown Culpeper on Davis Street and at the Depot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show starts at 10 a.m. and is free to spectators. July 6
A spaghetti lunch to benefit Kid’s Camp will be held at Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West St., Culpeper July 6 from noon to 2 p.m. Cost will be donations only.
Windmore presents Ash Lawn Opera Festival: Windmore Foundation for the Arts and the Friends of the Culpeper Library will present the Ash Lawn Opera Festival July 6, 2 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Culpeper County Library. This summer Ash Lawn is presenting the opera “Carmen” and the American musical, “My Fair Lady.”  Selections from both of these productions will be part of the presentation at the library on July 6 as well as other numbers sung by cast members from the 2008 productions. A donation at the door of $5 is requested.  Desserts and beverages will be available after the entertainment with an opportunity to visit with the performers.
The Town of Culpeper Public Works Department will be flushing fire hydrants the week of July 6-11 so that water lines may be kept free of corrosive materials. Hydrants in the south and east parts of town will be flushed beginning at 10 p.m. on July 6 and July 7 the downtown and west ends of town beginning at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, and the north part of Town beginning at 10 p.m. on July 9 and July 10. Oatlands Summer Exhibit, Leesburg, six miles south of Leesburg on U.S. Route 15, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, will hold its annual “Four Seasons of Oatlands” Art Show & Sale.  The juried art show will run from July 7 through July 27.  The sale benefits Oatlands. The show is located in the historic Carriage House on the property. Both the gift shop and art show will be open to the public at no charge from Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A small donation will be requested to support the arts at Oatlands. The Rappahannock Historical Society invites you to their annual fundraiser, “An Afternoon To Die For,” on July 13 at The Meadows, home of John and Beverly Sullivan in Washington, VA.  This event will focus on the importance of historical cemeteries and the celebration of the lives of the Porter and Strother families who once lived there and are buried there.  Tickets are on sale at The Historical Society, by mail, phone or at the door.  Prices are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  For more information, please call 675-1163.
    Sunday, July 13-14
Windmore Foundation for the Arts announces open auditions for “Something’s Afoot” at the Depot Conference Facility on Sunday, July 13 and Monday July 14 at 7:30 PM.  Nathan Beatty will direct the play which will be performed on September 26 – 28 and October 3 – 5. “Something’s Afoot” is a murder mystery musical that spoofs all-things-detective, mainly the works of Agatha Christie, and especially her detective novel “And Then There Were None (aka Ten Little Indians)”. The play involves a group of people who are invited to the lake estate of Lord Dudley Rancour. When the wealthy lord is found dead, its a race against the clock to find out whodunnit.
Everyone auditioning should bring a list of their commitments through October 5.  Actors auditioning for the plays will be asked to bring a prepared song with sheet music.  (Accompanist will be provided)  Also light movement and cold readings from the script will be required.  Wear something you can move in and be ready to have fun.  To arrange a time to pick up a script or for further audition information, please call the Windmore office at 547-4333.

Culpeper Regional Hospital is hosting a weeklong Healthcare Career Exploration Camp for rising 8 and 9 graders.  “Camp Med” will run from July 14 through July 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.  Students will get a behind the scenes look at healthcare and our hospital operations. Beacon of Hope for Kids Camp (ages 5 to 9), Monday – Friday, July 14-18, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This is a bereavement camp bringing hope into a grieving child’s life through God’s love. To a child, the loss of a loved one is every bit as real and painful as it is to an adult. But because they don’t have the ability to express their thoughts freely, many issues in children go unnoticed. A Beacon of Hope for Kids Camp allows children to talk openly without judgment and to find comfort and healing. The program includes games, art projects, literature, movies, songs, Bible stories and other activities. Facilitated by Karen Angell and Chaplain Liz Danielsen. RSVP is necessary. Empowering Culpeper USDA Food Commodity Distribution has release their distribution schedule for Culpeper: July 19; August 16; September 20; October 18; November 8; December 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 740 Old Brandy Road, Culpeper. Families that are income eligible will be enrolled to receive food commodities on a monthly basis. Households that receive Food Stamps or Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are automatically eligible. The Culpeper Connector provides drop off and pick up transportation to the church. GRC Photography & Design will be opening a new storefront location in Bealeton, and the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce will be there to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration June 19 at 4:40 p.m. at 6384 Village Center Drive, Bealeton. Members of the public, elected officials, press, and members of the Chamber are officially invited to attend. This event is free and open to the public, with refreshments served immediately following the ceremony.

Culpeper Library: On Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 p.m., author Blaine Pardoe will talk at the Culpeper Library about his most recently published book, “Terror of the Autumn Skies,” the story of Frank Luke, Jr., the balloon buster from Arizona. Mr. Pardoe, who lives in Amissville, was born in Newport News and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan.  He is a 1985 graduate of Central Michigan University, and began his writing career there where he wrote for the school’s award-winning newspaper. The talk is free and the public is invited. Join us in the Meeting Room of the Culpeper Library on Saturday, July 26.

Childbirth Preparation Class at the Family Birth Center at Culpeper Regional Hospital.  The class will help prepare the expectant mother for the birthing experience,  including relaxation and breathing techniques. The class is taught by FBC Certified Childbirth Instructors.  Choose from a weekend series August 2 and 3 or September 6 and 7 or a weeknight series October 22, 29, November 5 and 12.  Cost is $85 per couple. Empowering Culpeper USDA Food Commodity Distribution has release their distribution schedule for Culpeper: August 16; September 20; October 18; November 8; December 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 740 Old Brandy Road, Culpeper. Families that are income eligible will be enrolled to receive food commodities on a monthly basis. Households that receive Food Stamps or Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are automatically eligible. The Culepper Connector provides drop off and pick up transportation to the church. Taste of the Mountains Madison’s annual Festival, Saturday, August 30, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the lawn of the White Gazebo, David Leckie Gilmore will be our special guest. Call 829-1025.
September 6
Seventeenth annual Louisa County Air Show will be held Saturday, September 6, with gates open at 11 a.m. and Airshow from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This will be held at the Louisa County Airport/Freeman Field. Take I-64 to the Ferncliff Exit #143; follow signs to Louisa County Airport.  The Louisa County Air Fair is free admission to the public. Will be accepting a can of food for our local food bank! It’s time to walk for Healthy Babies! 2008 Culpeper March for Babies will be held Sunday, September 28, at 2 p.m. at Yowell Meadow Park.  Come join us for a morning of walking, food and fun! Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and then we walk at 2 p.m. The funds that you help raise will support the March of Dimes efforts to prevent birth defects and prematurity in babies both here and across the world.
