Culpeper Star Exponent

The Culpeper String Orchestra will present its final concert of the 2006-07 season at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the forum of Culpeper Middle School. Marco Escobar will conduct the Culpeper String Chamber Orchestra and The Culpeper String Camerata delighting the audience with such favorites as Rossini's "William Tell Overture," Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto," Chase's "Ragtime Fiddle," Vivaldi's "Concerto Grosso," Custer's "Orange Blossom Special" and Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean."

The sixth grade String Orchestra will perform such classics as "Pokey Piggy Polka," Leopold Mozart's "Toy Symphony" and Frank Rodger's "String Explosion."

This concert will also feature wonderful music compositions written by members of the Culpeper String Orchestra in honor of their parents. Please join the strings students for what promises to be a great experience for families, and especially for the children of the Culpeper community. Admission is free. June 13
Culpeper Christian Women's Club will be having a "Once Upon A Wedding" brunch at 9:45 a.m. at Nikos at Best Western of Culpeper. Special feature will be "Wedding Memorabilia;" special speaker will be Jeanne Bereznicki, of Pittsburgh, Pa. All ladies of the community are invited to come out and share with us your wedding gown of yesteryear and/or any items you have from your wedding of yesteryear. Cost is $7.50 inclusive. George Washington Carver star talent contest will be held June 1, with additional contests on June 8, June 15, and June 22. The winners of all four weeks will return for the finals on June 29, when $1,000 will be awarded to the GWC Star and $1,000 will be awarded to the GWC Junior Star. Deadline to have entry forms to GMW is Friday.

The Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market is open every Saturday now through October from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the East Davis Street parking lot in downtown Culpeper.  Visit the market for locally grown produce, flowers and much more. 

June 9
The Dent and Pauline West family reunion will be held June 9, from 10 a.m. until dark at the Rappahannock Community Center, Route 211, Washington, Va. A covered dish luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. For further information call Daisy at 547-2521.

Hokie Spirit Memorial Ride June 2-3. Ride from Sperryville  to Virginia Tech There is a $20 entry fee per bike. Ride starts at Rappahannock County High School (take Route 211 west from Warrenton). Registration begins at 6 a.m. The bikes leave at 8 a.m. sharp. "The Cellar" in Blacksburg will have lunch available. All proceeds returned to Hokie Spirit Memorial. The Ruritan Club is in need of donated yard sale items for its Aug. 25, yard sale at the Jeffersonton Community Center. Pick-up service is available. Indoor or outdoor yard/craft sale spaces are available for anyone who wishes to participate. Proceeds go to scholarships, local public service organizations and other very worthwhile charitable causes. Call 937-5682.

It is that time of year again in Brandy Station, the time of the year to be making plans for the annual Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department fundraising carnival.  This year's carnival will run from July 25 — 28.  The fire department is once again looking for young ladies interested in representing the fire department as their honorary fire chiefs.  The honorary fire chief contest is broken down into two separate categories, the junior ladies are from 8 to 14 years old and the senior ladies are from 15 — 21.  The sale of fundraising raffle tickets for the fire department determines the winners.  Each young lady finishing the contest is awarded a percentage of the amount of tickets she sells.  The two winners are crowned the senior and junior honorary fire chief and represent the fire department in area parades during the year.  The crowning takes place during the carnival.  To signup contact Lisa Art, the coordinator at 540-212-8206.

CCHS Classes of 1972 and 1973 Joint Reunion will be held at Best Western, Culpeper. We have address of some but some we don't. Call Susan at 540-547-3665 if you are a member of this class and give us your address.

Culpeper Literacy Council will be giving free GED practice tests on  June 21 from 8:45 a.m.  to1 p.m. at 415 S. Main St., Suite 204. Call the Culpeper Literacy Council at 825-5804 to sign up.

Culpeper Regional Hospital will be sponsoring Vine Arts on June 10. Our fifth annual art auction will run from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Depot. Art has been generously donated by local artists.  An array of wines will be served.  Tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple.  The event raises money for the pediatric areas of Culpeper Regional Hospital.  Dress will be casual.
