Born of Revolutionary stock in Cornwall Hollow, Conn., John Sedgwick graduated from West Point in 1837. Fighting in both the Seminole and Mexican Wars, Sedgwick later battled Plains Indians while also serving with a senior officer, Robert E. Lee.
