Join the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield April 4 at 7 p.m. to view the 48-minute documentary "Still Standing: The Stonewall Jackson Story." This film, which captures the legacy and Christian character of a uniquely American hero, will be shown in the Parish Hall of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 115 N. East Street, in Culpeper. Richard Williams, author of "Stonewall Jackson: The Black Man's Friend" will introduce the film and explain how it evolved from his book. Books and DVDs will be available for purchase. Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department, Brandy Station, announces it is the time of the year to be making plans for the annual Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department fundraising fair. This year's fair will run from July 30 to August 2. The fire department is once again looking for girls interested in representing the fire department as their honorary fire chiefs. The honorary fire chief contest is broken down into two separate categories, the junior girls are from 8 to 14 years old and the senior ladies are from 15-21. The person who sells the most fundraising raffle tickets for the fire department determines the winners. Each girl finishing the contest is awarded a percentage of the amount of tickets they sell. The two winners are crowned the senior and junior honorary fire chief and represent the fire department in area parades during the year. The crowning takes place during the carnival. Fourth Anniversary celebration of the Brush Strokes Gallery will be held April 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 810 Caroline St., second floor. Windmore seeks nominations for the Mary B. Allen Art Award: Windmore Foundation for the Arts annually presents the Mary B. Allen Art Award to an organization, group or individual in the region whose efforts mirror Windmore' goal of encouraging young people in the community to explore the arts and develop their talents. To be eligible for this award an individual, group or organization (paid or volunteer) must have gone "above and beyond" the call of duty to further promote the arts in the community and/or enrich the lives of others through the arts and the projects must be based in the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange or Rappahannock.
The deadline for nominations is by 5 p.m. April 15.  The winner will be announced at Windmore's Annual Membership Reception on Friday, May 9 at Prince Michael Vineyards.

April 5

The Brightwood Ruritan Club will have a Big Country Breakfast April 5 from 7 to 11 a.m., at the group's clubhouse just off  U.S. 29 at Route 607. This all-you-can-eat meal features fresh-off-the-grill pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits, fried apples, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children eleven and younger. For an extra dollar, adults can add scrambled eggs. Children can do the same for fifty cents. The Brandy Station Battlefield will participate in the Civil War Preservation Trust's Park Day 2008 on April 5. Interested volunteers are requested to meet at the Graffiti House at 9 a.m. Working together, they will clean and repair the Brandy Station battlefield.  Volunteers will recieve a free T-shirt donated by the History Channel. A tour will depart from the Civil War Graffiti House in Brandy Station at 10 a.m. on April 5. The tour covers the early morning fighting between troops under the command of Union Gen. John Buford and those commanded by his West Point classmate, Confederate Gen. William E. "Grumble" Jones. Incidents examined include the death of Union Col. Benjamin Franklin Davis in a one-on-one encounter with a Confederate lieutenant on the Beverly Ford Road, and the charge of the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry (better know as "Rush's Lancers") against Confederate artillery at Saint James Church. Wayside Theatre Artistic Director Warner Crocker announces Wayside Theater will present the Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize winning Comedy Drama "Driving Miss Daisy." The final production in the 2007-2008 season will be presented at the Royal Phoenix Theater in Front Royal. Driving Miss Daisy opens April 5 and continues through April 26.  Ticket prices are $23 to $28 for adults. Prices for children 17 and under are $10 for any show. April 5-17

The Friends of Wilderness Battlefield (FoWB) and the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (FSNMP) will conduct training sessions for individuals interested in being an interpreter of Ellwood. New volunteers are required by FSNMP to attend a training session scheduled for April 5 as well as one of the veteran interpreter trainings scheduled for April 12 or April 17.  All sessions will be held at Ellwood.  The April 5 training is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the April 12 and April 17 ones are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All training will be conducted by Greg Mertz, National Park Service Supervisory Historian.  Each new volunteer will receive a manual.  Interpreters will learn about the status of this historic home's restoration and have the opportunity to select dates for volunteering during the 2008 season.  The FSNMP encourages interpreters to commit to once-a-month service during the Ellwood season of May through October.

James Madison's Montpelier will host a guided tour of the James Madison Landmark Forest, a 200-acre old-growth forestApril 6 at 2 p.m. Montpelier horticulturist Sandy Mudrinich will take participants on a 90-minute journey through the Landmark Forest, also known as the "Big Woods." No additional charge above standard admission fee is charged for the "Big Woods Walk" on April 6. For information call 672-2728. April 7
The April meeting of the Culpeper Chapter 296 AARP will be held on April 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Culpeper Baptist Church. The program for the 7th will have two features: Angela Langston, Manager of "Daybreak", will speak on the Adult Daycare offered by that agency; Del. Ed Scott, will speak on decisions by the recent Virginia General Assembly that are relevant to Senior Citizens in the Commonwealth. Welcome to our April meeting!

Culpeper Middle School Parent Night 2008: Parents are invited to join the staff of Culpeper Middle School for an information session for rising sixth graders from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on April 8. The program will be hosted by CMS administrators, counselors and faculty. The evening will begin with a presentation in the Forum. The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District's monthly Board of Directors' meeting will be held April 8 in Greene County at the Blue Ridge Café on Route 29 South in Greene County.  Call 825-8591 for further directions.   

Culpeper County Inspections Department and Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor an Erosion Control Workshop for contractors April 8 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Germanna Center for Workforce and Community Education Room 104B. Spouse Loss Support Group meets Tuesday, from April 8 through June 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. This weekly group facilitated by Walter Wigglesworth and Robin DeLuca discusses topics of interest to those who spouse loss. Autism 101 — Information Sessions in April: All parents, grandparents, community members who know, work with, live with (or just care about) children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are invited to attend one of two special information sessions in April. The Culpeper County Public Schools' Parent Teacher Resource Center and Autism Team are sponsoring "Autism 101" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 9 and from 10:30 a.m. to noon April 14. Both meetings will be held at the Culpeper County Public Library. Come and meet the CCPS Autism Team and learn about community resources, programs and strategies available.  Network with other parents, family members and community members, pick up a helpful resource and informational packet and find out about training opportunities available.
