HaegumPlus, a hybrid fusion music group that perfoms with both traditional Korean and western instruments, will perform tonight at 6:30 in the Culpeper County Library meeting room.
HaegumPlus creates a new musical form full of beautiful melody and temperance with the haegum at its core, performing contemporary, original and experimental music appealing to both Koreans and non-Koreans alike.
The group’s signature style fuses Korean traditional music with non-traditional genres like classical and jazz to create sophisticated distinctive sounds with special appeal for universal audiences.
The group is led by Eun Il Kang, known to be the pioneer of “crossover music” with the haegum, a traditional Korean stringed instrument resembling a fiddle. She has expanded the instrument’s potential beyond the borders of traditional music by experimenting with other musical genres such as jazz and free music.
Along with the haegum, the group uses the gayageum (a traditional Korean zither-like 12-string instrument), the piri (a double-reed Korean instrument), the classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion and drums.
Kang has received wide acclaim for her international performances with world-renowned artists including Bobby McFerrin, Luciano Pavarotti and the Yoshida brothers.
This event is sponsored by the Korea Foundation, the State Theatre, the Windmore Foundation for the Arts and the Culpeper County Library. The concert is free and will feature a tasting of Korean dishes from the Korean-American Association of Northern Virginia.
